Ely Mens first team maintained their 100 per cent record as they brushed St Ives aside with a 4-0 victory.

The game began with Ely starting in typically strong fashion, pressing the St Ives defence back four for the first ten minutes of the game. The front three of Hunt, Abbas and Samouel continually running at the St Ives goal, with Dennis going close with the keeper off his line.

Shortly after, Tim Reynolds put Ely in the lead with a typical thunderbolt from a short corner.

It was not long afterwards that Ely found themselves two goals ahead. A well worked move, starting deep in the Ely half found Abbas receiving the ball in the middle of the pitch. An inch-perfect pass into the path of Dennis saw St Ives back-peddling with the speed of the Ely break.

With the keeper off his line, Dennis slipped the ball left to Samouel, who slotted the ball with venom in the corner of the St Ives goal.

A resurgent St Ives were not content to finish the first half quietly however, the back four of Atkins, Reynolds, Dodsworth and Kisby kept them at bay. Several short corners were also well defended with goalkeeper Gilmour producing some fine saves to keep the Ely clean sheet intact.

In the second half, St Ives piled the pressure on Ely’s goal but the clean sheet remained with some fine stops on the line from Dodsworth and Atkins, and further feline reflexes from Gilmour.

However, Ely were not finished yet. Changing to a more defensive set up, Ely sat back and absorbed some of the pressure before pouncing on an unprepared St Ives back four. Continued hard work from Brown and incisive passing from Wells opened up the opposition defence, before Hunt found himself in front of goal to score.

No sooner had St Ives reset, than Ely had broken again, with Samouel again finding himself in the right position to slot the ball home for the fourth goal.

The win made it eight wins from eight for Ely, who return back to home territory next week for a decisive clash with Cambridge South, who will also be looking to maintain their 100 per cent record.

Ely men’s 2s fell to defeat, however, losing 5-0 to Cambridge South 2; a result which leaves them bottom of Division 4NW.

Ely men’s 3s secured their first points of the season, drawing 2-2 with Cambs Nomads 2.

Ely Ladies suffered a 4-1 loss to Cambridge University 3, meaning they are now fifth in Division 3NW after losing only their second match this season.

Ely Ladies 2s hosted Cambs South Ladies 3rd’s on Saturday and thrashed them 10-0.

Ely started strong and after only five minutes Ellie Alderton saw to it that Ely notched up their first goal with a good strike from a penalty corner leaving the Cambs South defence helpless.

From the push back Ely pushed up and Alderton scored her second goal. Ely’s third goal came from a penalty corner sealing Alderson’s hat trick after only 15 minutes. Rhianne Jones scored Ely’s fourth goal just before half time.

The second half saw Ely continue to press and attack Cambs South leading to a further six goals with two from Rhianne Jones giving her a hat-trick, two from Angelica Ferentinos and another two from Ellie Alderton to seal the 10-0 victory.

Finally, Ely Ladies 3s were unable to find their first win of the season, losing 6-0 to Cambridge South 2 which leaves them bottom of Division 4NW(S).
