HOCKEY ROUND-UP

Ely City 1 Norwich Union II 1

ELY looked to bounce back from a poor result against Sudbury as they entertained Norwich Union II.

Norwich took the lead from a penalty corner, a powerful dipping shot hammered into the back-board, leaving Chris Vincett in the Ely goal stranded. Norwich continued to win penalty corners, but excellent direct running from Neil Dodsworth stop them from shooting.

At half time, Ely regrouped and looked to use the wings instead of trying to be too direct. Ely completed dominated the second half with man of the match Nick Wells putting a skillful and energetic display in the centre of midfield.

Just as it was looking like it was not going to be Ely's day, Reynolds shot from close range, the shot struck a Norwich foot, penalty stroke. Purllant stepped up and duly dispatched it into the top corner.

Ely fell asleep after scoring and Norwich had their first shot of the second half, strong defending kept the opposition out. In their eagerness to score, Ely tried to pick the perfect pass looking to hit the centre-forwards early and create a goal instead of building the play and attacking down the wings.

Wisbech Ladies III 1 Ely Ladies II 0

ELY Ladies travelled to Wisbech with only nine players for a league match on Saturday, and despite the final score, put up an excellent team performance in the face of much pressure from the opposing team.

Captain and keeper Laura Tuck led a strong, resilient defence and made vital saves when Wisbech tried to capitalise on their advantage over a depleted Ely side..

However, despite good calling, accurate passing, and a disallowed Wisbech goal, a chance shot found its way onto the Ely backboard and the score was 1-0 in favour of the home side.

The second half showed Ely refusing to let their heads hang low, and early ball possession was all in their favour.

Good communication between defence and midfield meant right-half Nat Chandler kept running and Wisbech were unable to penetrate the defensive forces of Sam Carford and Fran Flack. Amelia Hamilton-Kennaway cleared the ball from Ely's 25-yard line several times.

Wisbech emerging the victors, but Ely were congratulated by both umpires for their performance.
