HOCKEY ROUND-UP

University of Cambridge III 1 Ely City 1

ELY first XI maintained their good form with a hard-fought draw away to University of Cambridge on Saturday. In this early push back it was the home side that dominated early on, Ely absorbed the pressure well and looking to gain possession.

Neither team created much from open play early on, Ely had numerous penalty corners but were unable to covert. Rich Vincett and Chris Purllant both going close after good work down the left from Oli Shearing. It was Cambridge who opened the scoring, a low slow push eliding the Ely defence and wrong footing Chris Vincett in the Ely goal, 1-0. Ely hit back almost immediately, Tommy Hugo neatly deflecting a Purllant strike from a penalty corner.

The rest of the game was a scrappy affair, with both teams creating chances without being able to finish the game off. Chris Roberts went closest lifting a clever pass from man of the match Nick Wells over the diving Cambridge keeper, the ball hit the post and settled on the line before a Cambridge defender was able to clear.

Ely City II 4 St Neots III 3

AFTER a disappointing result away last week to Cambridge, Saturday saw a return to form of Ely 2nd's and a climb up the table to their highest positioning so far this season. Ely scored first after a fine ball into the box from David Silk found Paul Smith to smash in his first of the afternoon.

Ely held out for most of the half but two goals in quick succession saw St Neots end the half with a 2 -1 lead. Ely started the second half brightly and quickly equalised with some excellent play down the flank by Mark Hunt and Pete Raines.

The game was wrapped up ten minutes from time with two quick goals before Paul Smith netted his 13th of the season to round the game off.
