A GUTSY performance from Soham Town Rangers saw them come from behind to beat high-flyers Chesham 3-2 on Saturday.

Missing six first-team regulars through injury and coming into the game on the back of a 5-1 thumping at Sudbury, the odds were stacked firmly against Ian Benjamin's side but dogged persistence and a slice of luck saw them secure a priceless victory just three minutes from time.

The win, only their third of the season, moves the Greens up into 16th place ahead of the visit of Bromsgrove on November 7.

Time and again this season, Soham have been caught napping in the opening forays and so it proved again on this occasion as Chesham opened their account with just a minute on the clock as Danny Burnell drilled past Ian Pledger.

Despite an onslaught in the ensuing minutes, Soham held firm and parity was restored somewhat against the run of play as youngster Luke Hipwell fed Dubi Ogbonna, who stunned the home crowd with a searing thirty yard strike.

The home side were notably irked by Ogbonna's equaliser and spent the remainder of the half peppering the Soham goal as Burnell and midfielder Steve Wales both had good opportunities to score, only to be denied by the insurmountable Pledger.

The Soham custodian's resistance finally faltered a little after the 30-minute mark as Generals skipper Danny Talbot, curled home a free kick from 20 yards.

The opening exchanges of the second-half once again saw a veritable abundance of chances for the home side but a combination of wanton finishing and fine goalkeeping kept the deficit at just one.

Taking full advantage of their host's frivolity, the Greens drew level a minute shy of the hour mark as right-back Simon Flanz smashed home following some fine interplay with midfielder Michael Simpson.

Parity restored, both teams poured forward in the last quarter of the game desperately looking for an opportunity to snag the three points.

Despite a host of chances for the home side, it was Soham who would snatch the win with just three minutes remaining as substitute Andy Furnell collected a guilt edge pass Dubi Ogbonna to slide home.
