SOHAM slipped to a narrow loss at fellow strugglers Northwood on Saturday despite taking an early lead.

The recently returned Rob Foster fired the Greens in front with little more than 15 minutes of the game gone but a resurgent Northwood side rallied for the second half and overturned the deficit to take an important win in their bid to dodge relegation.

The loss sees Ian Benjamin’s Soham remain in 17th place in the Zameretto Division One Central, with the visit of relegation battlers AFC Hayes on Saturday next up.

Early chances for Foster and Scott Carter boded well for the Greens early on before Foster slotted the opener for the visitors, latching on to a low cross from Deakan Napier to tap home.

Defender Alex Austin forced an excellent save from Northwood keeper Sam Styles moments after Soham’s opener, collecting another Napier cross before firing goalwards.

As the half progressed the home side began to settle into the game and they managed to pull level in the 35th minute as Scott Orphranou collecting a half-cleared free-kick inside the area before placing low past Dan Bircham.

Another excellent save from Styles denied Napier’s shot early in the second half as Soham looked to regain control but their designs on the lead were dented by Aaron Lansiquot who latched onto Orphranou’s pass to drill home Northwood’s second.

The two sides exchanged chances as the half wound to a close, with Soham’s Richard Gammon going closest in injury time, only for his effort to be denied by Styles’ outstretched leg.
