SOHAM boss Andy Furnell said his side would have to cut out the “little mistakes” if there were to start turning draws into wins.

The Greens draw against Potters Bar on Saturday was their fourth in seven league games so far this term but Furnell believes side are not far short of turning one point into three.

“It’s the silly little mistakes that are costing us at the moment and you will get punished at this level,” he said.

“The squad is getting better, we might bring in one more new face next week, but if we can cut out the little mistakes I think we will be able to get it right and get those wins.”

It took just five minutes for Potters Bar to move into the lead, a long ball forward not dealt with by a flat-footed Greens defence calmly slotted home past Dan Bircham.

The visitors quickly took control of the game in the aftermath of their goal, with the Greens defence all at sea against a dominant Potters midfield.

Fortunately for Soham however, the visitors were unable to turn their possession into goals as a number of decent attacking positions were wasted.

It wasn’t until the 25 minute-mark that Soham were finally able to forge forward decisively, David Cobb seeing his goal disallowed for offside before Matt Robinson’s header was brilliantly denied at point blank range after Michael Simpson had headed back across goal.

The Potters custodian was pressed into action once again just five minutes later, an outstretched leg denying Cobb’s low shot.

As against Brentwood Town earlier in the week, it took until the second half before the Greens finally got going, Scott Carter seeing his powerful header deflected wide by some excellent defending just two minutes after the restart.

Substitute Richard Gammon injected some vigour into the Soham attack after he came on early in the piece and it was he who lashed home the equaliser after latching on to a threaded ball from Carter.

Gammon though he had doubled his tally after 20 minutes only to see his tap in denied for offside.

The visitors were not entirely overawed however, and both Alex Austin and Carter had to be alert to clear off the line on separate occasions as the Potters broke at pace.

Soham’s best chance of the half came with little more than 10 minutes remaining as Cobb let loose from 16 yards, only for his left-foot-thunderbolt to clatter off the upright.

“They had our number in the first half,” said Furnell, “but we made some changes in the second half which worked for us and in the end I was disappointed that we only came away with a draw.”
