A POINT against newly-promoted Daventry Town on Saturday moved Soham Town Rangers off the bottom of the table.

A herculean defensive effort from Soham kept high-flying Daventry at bay and secured Benjamin’s men their first clean sheet in the league this season.

The Greens lamentable run of form early in the season kept them rooted to the foot of the Zameretto League but Saturday’s point moves them above AFC Hayes and in to 21st place.

A subdued opening quarter from Soham saw Daventry dictate much of the play but after coping well with what the visitors had to offer, the hosts were able to forge some chances of their own.

The returning Scott Carter had a close range effort bundled away at the back post while fit-again Dubi Ogbonna saw his one-on-one effort well saved by Joe Mellings.

Daventry’s Aaron Stringfellow headed against the bar less than five minutes into the second half with Carter again going close for Soham at the other end.

Midfielder Rogan McGeorge had a thunderous shot well saved by an in-form Mellings on the hour mark while Ogbonna went close form a free-kick.

Daventry were not overawed though, and went close to stealing the points late on as Rob Foster raced through on Dan Bircham’s goal.

Fortunately for the Greens however, Foster spooned over the bar under pressure from the Greens custodian.

Soham’s Tuesday night Red Insurance Cup clash with Hemel Hempstead Town was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
