SOHAM Town Rangers boosted their survival hopes with an encouraging 2-1 win over fellow-strugglers North Greenford United on Tuesday night.

A poachers goal in the first half for Scott Carter gave the Greens the upper-hand and they continued to dictate play long into the second half, with Declan Rogers smashing home 20 minutes from time to seal the win.

The crucial three points moves Ian Benjamin’s men onto 29 points, six clear of basement side Beaconsfield SYCOB albeit having played a game more.

The home side used their slick passing game to good effect in the early stages of the match and had Greenford chasing shadows for much of the opening stages, though they had to wait until the 12th minute before Napier tested the goalkeeper with a shot from just inside the area.

Carter also forced the keeper into action after 20 minutes with a header from six yards that was desperately clawed away by the Greenford custodian.

The breakthrough finally came in the 23rd minute when a mix up between goalkeeper and defender allowed Carter to nip in between the two and poke home.

Michael Simpson tested the keeper once more 10 minutes after the goal with a dipping shot from 20 yards but, despite shoveling the ball awkwardly into space, the goalkeeper managed to gather at the second attempt.

The last 10 minutes of the half saw Greenford enjoy their best spell and they might have drawn level but for the good work of Greens’ keeper Dan Bircham who saved well under his crossbar following a looped header.

Soham re-grouped after half-time and slipped back into a familiar pattern of play, using wide-men Napier and Rogers to dominate the play, and the home side were finally handed their reward 20 minutes from time when Rogers lashed home from outside the box.
