ELY City Golf Club were crowned scratch league champions at the weekend, ending a 29-year wait for the coveted trophy.

The club’s scratch team ended an impressive 2010 season with a 44-point haul, some way clear of their nearest rivals Elton Furze.

The club’s scratch team last won the competition in 1981, though they were runners up in 2009 after losing out to Gog Magog Golf Club by virtue of their holes up/down record.

Ely’s superlative home form was one of the key reasons for their success with no Ely player losing a fixture at home. A 5-1 victory at Royston and two vital points at Furze were among their key victories.

Mark Smith, Ely’s scratch team captain, said “We have an outstanding team spirit and this shows on the golf course, especially in scratch foursomes.

“Im delighted for the players and to win the league during the year that Jim Kenning is club captain meant a lot to us especially as Jim was a member of the team the last time Ely won 29 years ago”

Ely have had one a bumper year so far in Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union (CAGU) competitions with victories for Lee Yearn in the county championships as well as success in the county fourball competition.
