Bowls City of Ely bowler Nick Brett beat world number one and defending champion Paul Foster to claim the Co-operative funeralcare Scottish International Open.

Exacting revenge for defeating by the same opponent at the same stage last year, Brett played some of the best bowls of his career to take the win, 5-7, 9-6, 2-1.

Brett said: “It’s a dream come true. For about 10-12 years I have dreamed of winning a World Bowls Tour title. I know I’m in the top sixteen but I didn’t want to become a player who never won a title, just look at Colin Montgomery, a world class player but never won a major and I didn’t want to be that sort of player.”

The first set saw some world class bowls from both players and was nip and tuck all the way. For every bowl Foster put close Brett had a reply.

The scoreline was locked at 5-5 after seven ends and Foster picked up the eighth end with a single which saw him hold the lead into the last end of the set.

Excellent openers by Foster forced Brett into one of his runners and he shot the jack out onto the re spot. Foster drew and took the first set 7-5.

The second set, as in all games this week, set off early ends nip and tuck, then Foster picked up a one and a two to go 6-2 up after six ends.

But not so as Brett picked up a one and a two over the next two ends to be just a single point behind going into the last end. In the last end, Brett Picked up a four and, with it, the second set, taking the match to tie break.

The deciding ends were every bit as tight as the opening two sets but it was Brett who held his nerve to claim to the win.

Brett’s City of Ely clubmate Greg Harlow also competed in Perth but was knocked out at the semi-final stage.

Elsewhere, City of Ely were in action against Haverhill in the Denny Cup, with teenager Josh Easy given a debut.

Playing with Harlow, Matt Marsden and Andrew Ware, the youngster enjoyed a comfortable victory, 34-9, showing no first time nerves.

Josh’s father Andrew also tasted victory after a slow start. Supported by Ben Akroyd, Dale Spring and Ed Elmore, Easy found himself 7-3 down after the fifth end but recovered well to finish 31-15.

On the away rink Ian Brown also suffered an early setback and had to recover from an eight-shot deficit after 10 ends to run out a winner by 26-17. Stuart Popple was involved in a tight struggle but eventually came through by two shots to allow Ely an overall victory 107-55. Next up for the City men will be Lynnsport on November 30.
