A resurgent Ely City side recorded a second win in as many weeks to surge clear of bottom spot in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division.

The Robins had gone 12 league games without a win and were sat bottom of the table heading into last Saturday but two wins on the bounce have reignited their season and seen them take a decisive step towards safety.

Delighted boss Brady Stone said: “The difference in our play in the last couple of weeks is that we have taken our chances and cut out the mistakes. When you deny the opposition easy goals it takes the pressure off and changes the game.

“Losing 12 games in a row was not the best start to the season so it has been a huge relief to get the two wins. And I’m really pleased for the boys because they have been turning up week after week and training hard. They have deserved this.”

Saturday’s win was made all the more impressive after the Robins fought back from a goal down.

The visitors were headed in front in the 38th minute by Peter Lambert and might have extended their lead going into half-time but for some last-ditch defending from the hosts.

A turning point came early in the second half when Gorelston appealed for a penalty, complaining that defender Luke Fretwell had prevented the ball going over the line with his arm.

But the referee waved their appeals away and, within two minutes, Ely were level.

A shot from distance was parried by the visitor’s keeper into the path of Jeffery, who poked home from close range to send the home faithful into raptures.

And battling Ely moved into the lead in the 84th minute through James Tricks, whose floated effort from just inside the box evaded everyone and crept into the far corner, via a post.

Ely face a weekend off from football because of FA Trophy fixtures but are scheduled to return to action on November 8 when they travel to league leaders Norwich United.

Stone said: “A lot of people have said it was probably a bad time for us to have a week off because of how we have been playing but it will be good for the boys to have a rest and come back for Norwich, because it is going to be a very tough game.”
