SOHAM Town Rangers slipped to their third defeat in succession after they were edged out 2-0 by Nuneaton Town.

The Greens fought tirelessly throughout the match to keep pace with their lofty opponents but they were undone by a few moments of weakness which were callously seized upon by the visitors.

Boss Ian Benjamin, said "I though we were unlucky to go in at half-time a goal down because we played really well and I thought we matched them.

"Being a former conference team though, Nuneaton were always going to be strong and they managed to take the chances they got, which was the difference between the sides on the day."

Coming into the match Soham welcomed Charles Libam back into the starting 11 for the first time this year with Aaron Turner also restored to the team sheet after a notable absence.

The addition of both Turner and Libam ensured Soham were industrious in the opening exchanges and they were evidently keen to get amongst their esteemed opponents who, despite creating little, enjoyed the better of the possession and territory.

Much to their credit though, the Greens were seldom overawed by their opponents and endeavoured where possible to keep the visitors from attaining the kind of fluidity that would inevitably have caused them problems.

With Nuneaton and their sizeable following contained, the ideal basis for attack was formed, but Soham lacked the cohesion going forward that they seemed to have mastered in defence.

A good half's work was squandered just a few minutes short of the whistle though, as an error of judgement from Glen Fuff allowed striker David Blenkinsopp to steal the ball and square for Paul Spacey to smash home.

The setback was doubtlessly one that would have hurt Soham, whose concentration and effort in keeping Nuneaton out had been almost herculean up until that point.

Benjamin's men emerged for the second half much in need of a goal, but it was the visitors who would register first as Spacey's darting run and cross found it's way perfectly into the path of Robert Oddy who thundered high into the net to double the lead.

Soham pushed hard for a way back into the game in the aftermath of the goal but, despite the efforts of Shawn Richards and Michael Simpson who both toiled at length, they proved unable to breach the walls of Town's seemingly monumental defence.

The loss sees Soham slip to 14th place in the BGB Midlands League with a trip to Sutton Coldfield on Monday their next match.
