Ely City’s director of football has called on Robins fans to keep the faith despite the club’s winless streak continuing into its 10th match on Tuesday night.
Sam Turner told the City faithful that both management and players were working over-time on the training pitch and said their support would be crucial in getting their first win.
Turner’s plea came after the Robins went down 4-2 at rivals Newmarket on Tuesday.
Another lapse in defence from Ely saw the hosts take the lead through Mark Webster inside the first minute but James Tricks was on hand to pull Ely level in the 37th minute with a fine strike.
Another two goals for Newmarket put them well on top by half-time and a fourth goal after the break all but decided the points. Josh Townshend added a consolation for Ely late on.
Turner said: “Once again we competed very well in a hard fought encounter but unfortunately a few silly mistakes stopped us taking our first points.
“We are competing in every match we have played this season, its a learning curve for our squad with a number of players still adjusting to there first season in this level of football.
“Although it has been very frustrating the players are in good spirits and slowly but surely we will find that winning habit.
“We knew at the start of the season that things will be tough and we are not going to panic by throwing money at the situation as many clubs have done in the past and then find themselves in financial problems.
“The message to all our fans is really get behind the boys as that first win is just around the corner and when it arrives we will really kick on.
“When you have periods like this its all about the character of the players and the people within the club, and all sticking together as one, we will continue to train hard and from the reserves through to the 1st team and we will get our rewards.”
Ely came into the game on the back of a damaging 3-1 defeat to Thetford Town at the Unwin Ground on Saturday.
Thetford moved into a comfortable 3-0 lead before new signing James Carmen grabbed a consolation for the Robins in the dying minutes.
Ely will be back in action again on Saturday when they host Whitton United at the Unwin Ground. Kick off is 3pm.
