Sutton Cricket Club are celebrating after winning a grant from the Sport England to improve the training and coaching facilities at the club.

The grant will go towards the purchase of new nets and net surfacing and a bowling machine for use at the club’s village ground, in Station Road, and for winter indoor nets.

The club runs two adult teams and is hoping to build upon and develop its thriving young cricketing talent. The club has about eight under 17s playing adult cricket every week.

The first team plays in Division 1 of the Cambridgeshire Junior League, while the second team competes Division 5.

Club captain, Mike Grady said: “We have two qualified coaches in our first team squad and have two club welfare officers. We will be starting our indoor nets for the adult teams at Littleport Leisure Centre on Sunday evenings from 7.30 to 8.30pm from March 8.

“We are looking to strengthen our first team squad, so if there are any new residents to the area looking to play regular cricket, do get in touch with the club.”

Second team vice-captain and Sutton resident, Craig Faux added: “Sutton is a well- run village club. We are very lucky to have several local businesses supporting us, including David Clark Estate Agents who are sponsoring the club’s clothing kit this year, and this together with the grant is putting us in a strong position to compete this coming summer.”
