SOHAM ended a 14-year hoodoo on Saturday, defeating the FA Vase finalists Lowestoft Town on their own patch.
The Crow Meadow hosts were by no means at full strength, but made most of the early running and forced a series of corners.
From their first meaningful attack however, Soham took the lead.
Callum Kearns fired an eighth free-kick into the Lowestoft penalty area, and Scott Carter looped a header over Rix to put his side in front.
Rangers doubled their lead in the 39th minute, Andy Furnell and Darren Jimson combining to knock Lea Jordan's long kick over the home defence and into the path of Carter who lifted his shot into the net.
Jimson limped off on the stroke of half-time to be replaced by Martin Bromwich, but Soham remained solid and extended their lead shortly after the interval.
Charles Libam and Michael Simpson were involved on this occasion, setting up Scott Johnson to place a shot past the Trawlermen's 'keeper.
Lowestoft pulled one back in the 54th minute when Plackett scored at the second attempt, but Jordan was otherwise unbeatable and made fine stops from Cockrill and King in the closing stages.
Soham remain seven points clear of Needham Market at the top of the table, but their rivals still have three games in hand.
Soham travelled to King's Lynn Reserves last night (Wednesday) before entertaining Leiston in their penultimate outing on Saturday.
