MILDENHALL Town head the Ridgeons Premier League thanks to two dramatic victories in three days.
Monday evening's 3-2 victory ended Histon Reserves' run of seven games unbeaten and inflicted only their second home defeat of the season.
Facing a Histon team bristling with first team talent, Mildenhall produced a battling display and came from behind to take the points with two goals in the final 15 minutes from substitute Dan Heron.
Matty Clements had opened the scoring on 55 minutes but Histon hit back with goals from Junior McDougald and Steve Jackman.
But Histon were left reeling by Heron's quick-fire brace and Mildenhall hung on for the final nine minutes of the game to win the match.
And on Saturday, it was another substitute who proved to be the Mildenhall hero when Craig Hammond netted a late winner in the 2-1 victory at bottom side Cambridge Regional College.
Town took the lead in the 55th minute when Louie Farrington steered in a diving header but the advantage lasted only 10 minutes.
CRC looked to be on their way to a precious point after Adam Smith had levelled the scores but with only two minutes remaining, Hammond turned his marker in the box and fired in the winner.
Town manager Trevor Munns said: "I knew that the longer we could stay in the game against Histon the stronger we would get.
"They fielded nine first-team players and it was always going to be a hard game but I changed things at half time, strengthening our forward line, and luckily for us it worked out well."
He added: "We have not played at our best this week but we must maintain our work-rate and not let our levels drop."
- SOHAM Town Rangers are only seven points behind Town, with a game in hand, following their impressive 2-0 victory at Woodbridge Town on Saturday.
Rangers dominated the game from the start and Michael Simpson's goal on two minutes put them on the road to three points.
Andy Furnell's eye-catching goal midway through the first half doubled the lead and despite creating numerous chances in the second half, Soham were unable to add to their tally.
- ELY City maintained their challenge at the top of the Ridgeons League First Division with a surprise 2-1 home victory over league leaders Swaffham Town.
It was only the second league defeat for Swaffham, whose run of six games unbeaten came to an end thanks to two goals in a minute midway through the first half.
Brady Stone's opener was followed by a second goal almost immediately from the restart when Robbie Mason latched onto a throughball and finished well. An own goal from Vinnie Long before the break proved to be little more than a consolation for the visitors.
However, Ely City were dumped out of the First Division Knockout Cup by Haverhill Rovers on Tuesday 2-1 at home.
