Stone earmarks return visit of Thetford for Ely’s first win

Ely City boss Brady Stone believes his side will break their duck this weekend as they welcome Thetford Town to the Unwin Ground.
The Robins are without a win in their opening eight games this season but Stone believes the weekend’s visit of Thetford will see them notch up that all-important first victory.
It will be the second time in a week that Ely will come up against Thetford after the two sides met in the FA Vase last Saturday, with Thetford coming out 2-1 winners.
But Stone believes he has learnt enough about Town to get the better of them on Saturday. Kick off is 3pm.
He said: “I knew they were going to be well organised and I knew they would have plenty of energy but we cut through them on a number of occasions.
“If we can tighten up at the back, I think we can hurt them and get our first win.”
Two goals in the opening 11 minutes put Ely up against it on Saturday as hosts Thetford shot out of the traps.
Attacking midfielder Sam Goodge pulled one back for the Robins shortly after the half-hour mark to raise hopes of a fight back.
But, despite ramping up the pressure in the second half, Ely couldn’t force a crucial second goal and they went away empty handed.
Stone said: “Like I said to the players after the game, we can’t keep being the better team and not taking any points.
“A couple of silly mistakes in the first 11 minutes cost us the game and you can’t afford to give teams in this league a head start like that.
“If we can cut out the mistakes and be more ruthless, we will start to get results but we’ve got to be stronger, we’ve got to make the right decisions.
“I’ve had a chat with the chairman and he is not worried. If we were getting beat by five or six every game there would be cause for concern but it’s not like that.
“Once we get that first win under our belt, it will do us good and we can crack on.”
