Soham missed the opportunity to make ground on the leaders as they were held to a draw by Kirkley on Saturday.
Goddard went close for the visitors before Paul Hill headed Soham's first chance over from Keke St Hilaire's corner, but Kirkley went close soon afterwards.
Carl Chenery's 25-yard free-kick beat the wall, but cannoned off the angle of bar and post with new signing Ian Pledger well beaten.
Charles Libam twice went close as Soham began to look dangerous midway through the first half, but Chenery missed a chance when he headed straight at Pledger.
Kirkley 'keeper Attridge was busy at the start of the second half, fielding shots from Libam and Michael Simpson, and Rangers thought they should have had a penalty on the hour when Simpson appeared to be shoved off the ball.
Simpson was soon in the thick of the action again however, setting up a chance for St Hilaire and then sliding a shot underneath Attridge but on to the outside of the post.
At the other end Carl Chenery headed over when well placed, and the intervention of Stuart Williams and Scott Johnson was required to deny Justin Chenery and Highfield in the same attack.
Substitute Steve Bell had Soham's final chance, looping a mis-kick narrowly wide before De Coteau's volley was comfortably taken by Pledger.
Soham manager Ian Benjamin thought that it was a match his side ought to have won.
"I felt that when we came in at half-time we were on top," he said, "and after the first five minutes of the second half we took control again.
"It just didn't go for us on the day," added the Rangers boss.
"I think we played well and were just a bit unfortunate.
"They (Kirkley) said that over the two games we are the best side they have played this season, and that says a lot."
- Soham travel to Felixstowe United for their next league match on Saturday.
