SOHAM Town Rangers let three points slip through their fingers on the opening day of the new season after drawing 2-2 at home to Bedworth United.
Goals from impressive debutant Dubi Ogbonna, and Michael Simpson gave Soham a comfortable 2-0 lead after half-an-hour but two key moments of indecision from the home defence proved costly for the Greens and afforded the visitors a share of the spoils.
The opening of the match itself was a comparatively mild affair with both teams working hard to control possession. Simpson, in particular, impressed with a typical display of authority and determination.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 28th minute when Ogbonna reacted quickest to a lose ball in the area to round an already flailing keeper and slot home.
Having worked tirelessly for the first goal, it came as something of a surprise to the gathered 145 when Simspon doubled the lead not a minute later, driving low to the keeper's right.
Charles Libam might have put the game to bed not long after the lead was doubled when he found himself in on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat. A wayward early-season finish from Libam however allowed United to emerge unscathed.
No sooner had Libam spurned his opportunity to extend the lead than United reduced it, as Robbie Beard capitalised on a misunderstanding between Chamberlain and a home defender to score.
After the break, Ian Benjamin's men re-organised and looked a solid unit as United began to pressure for a way back into the game. In a bid to sure up the defence, Benjamin introduced combative defender Simon Flanz to the action.
Even with the added body in defence, the Greens were unable to stop United from sneaking an equasliser after a half-cleared ball found its way to Robinson who poked home amid a melee.
Soham's next match in the newly named Zameretto League is away at Aylesbury on August 22.
