ELY City survived a second half fightback from Newmarket Town to record a 2-1 win on Tuesday night.

Goals in the opening 45 minutes from Richard Chadwick and James Wallis put the Robins in control but Town came back fighting in the second half forcing Ely into some desperate defence to secure a valuable win.

Alan Alsop’s men moved up to seventh place in the Ridgeons Premier League with the win ahead of their trip to Needham Market on Saturday in the FA Cup.

Boss Alsop said: “I think we deserved to win in the end. We played very well in the first half and they couldn’t live with us but they were on top for most of the second half and we had quite a bit of defending to do.”

Chadwick opened the scoring inside 20 minutes as he latched on to a ball from deep to streak clear of the defence and slot home. Wallis doubled the score with little more than 10 minutes remaining in the half as he smashed home from close range after a corner was only half cleared by the visitors.

ELY City unveiled their new training kit on Saturday which has been sponsored by Marshall Vauxhall of Ely.

Boss Alan Alsop and Marshall sales representative Dave Duckett unveiled the new tracksuits at the Unwin Ground on Saturday. The first team will be wearing the new kit for the 2011-12 season.
