Assistant boss Erkan Okay urged Soham Town Rangers to make Julius Martin Lane a fortress again last week - and the Greens look to have answered his call.

Soham ended a frustrating three-month wait for a Bostik North Division home win on Saturday with an impressive 3-1 success over Waltham Abbey, before going on to draw 2-2 with rivals Mildenhall Town last night.

Marcus Hall, Craig Gillies and Callum Russell goals secured Soham’s first league win since early October on Saturday and Jon Kaye and Joe Carden struck but were denied by a late Alex Stillinger goal in the derby under the floodlights.

Those results have moved Soham to within four points of the division’s top 10, and Okay says he is impressed with the development his squad has shown in recent weeks.

“Against Waltham Abbey we were different class and the whole team worked extremely hard,” he said.

“We were organised out of possession which gave us the platform to go on and win the game. It was great to see our two strikers get on the score sheet as they both put a great shift in.

“We never got going in the first half of the Mildenhall game and to be fair to them they were disciplined but in the second half we played with great tempo and purpose and created a lot of goal-scoring opportunities.

“We conceded towards the end which was disappointing as I thought we edged it in the second half with the chances we had.

“It’s two good results though and the squad has shown great progress in the last few weeks and we should have confidence to push on.”

Soham can extend their unbeaten run to three games – their longest run of the season - this weekend, but face a tricky away trip to Hertford Town (3pm).

The Blues are seventh in the league standings and are yet to be beaten on home soil this term.

Soham then travel to Wisbech Town in the Invitation Cup the following Tuesday (7.45pm).
