Sam Mulready marked the first start of his second Soham Town Rangers spell with his first goals since returning to the club.

The striker hit both Greens’ equalisers in a 2-2 deadlock against second-bottom Cheshunt at Julius Martin Lane last Saturday.

Mulready played a key role in Rangers’ survival in the Bostik North Division last season before moving to Evo-Stik Northern League Division One South outfit Corby Town in the summer, but he returned to Soham at the beginning of February.

Soham received an early let-off when a Ricky Stappleton effort for Cheshunt was ruled out for offside, but they did find themselves behind after 18 minutes when Dave Kendall headed in a corner.

Mulready restored parity on the stroke of half-time with a smart shot on the turn from the edge of the box after Jon Kaye laid the ball into his path.

The two teams then traded goals in the final 10 minutes with Cheshunt hitting the front for a second time courtesy of a Jason Hallett effort which stemmed from a poor clearance from Soham goalkeeper Josh Pope.

Mulready was only inches away from levelling in the very next attack as he headed over a Gary Cohen delivery, but he didn’t have to wait long for an equaliser.

Mulready was perfectly placed to head in an 85th minute corner from Joe Carden to haul the hosts level and ensure the spoils were shared.

Soham assistant manager Erkan Okay told the @squeezefootball account on Twitter: “We struggled in the first half, but managed to stay in the game and get level.

“It was an improved performance from us in the second half and a draw was probably a fair result in the end.

“It’s a positive point considered we weren’t at our best.”

Soham remain 18th in the North Division standings after going three matches without a win.

They travel to a Barking side, who still harbour play-off hopes, this Saturday.
