SOHAM were handed a lesson in clinical finishing by mid-table Thamesmead on Saturday.

Despite arguably enjoying the better of the possession and play against their opponents, Andy Furnell’s had nothing to show for their efforts and found themselves three goals down at half-time as the home side made the most of every chance.

A similar pattern continued after the break and Thamesmead added a final goal to complete a thumping win over the Greens.

The defeat leaves Soham in 19th place in the Ryman Division One North, with a trip to promotion chasers Tilbury to come on Saturday.

The hosts made the most of a frantic opening as they took the lead with just three minutes played, Lea Dawson reacting quickest to a deep corner to tuck home from close quarters.

Boss Furnell and youngster Ben Seymour-Shove both had half-chances for the Greens and centre-back Martin Bromwich saw a thunderous 30-yard effort slip narrowly wide as the hosts retreated.

David Cobb also saw his shot from 18 yards denied by a despairing block as chances came and went for the visitors.

The home side extended their lead somewhat against the run of play in the 39th minute, keeper Dan Bircham failing to hold on to a shot from Joseph Afusi.

Matters quickly worsened for Soham as, two minutes later, Daniel Kerrigan finished well from a tight angle to make it 3-0.

Seymour-Shove was played through on goal by Michael Simpson in injury time but his effort was blocked by the legs of Thamesmead keeper Sam Mott with the goal begging.

Both sides huffed and puffed in the second half but shots from range from Dan Cotton and Seymour-Shove were the best Soham had to show for their efforts while Dan Bircham denied a striker when through one-on-one.

Thamesmead added a fourth goal in the final minute of play as Afusi finished well from close range.
