AN injury-time stunner from Nick Impey saw Ely snatch all three points from their tussle with Haverhill on Tuesday night.

After recovering from going a goal behind, midfielder Impey smashed home from 25 yards to provide a fitting end to a lively match between the two sides and secure Ely their first win in four matches.

Boss Alan Alsop said: “We have quite a lot of players out in key positions so it was a good win for us. It was a hard-fought game, it always is against Haverhill, bit I think we just about deserved the win based on the last 20 minutes or so.

“We were the ones who had that little bit more ambition to get forward and go for the winning goal and we got the reward in the end so we were pleased.”

The win moves Ely up into 13th place in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division ahead of their trip to Woodbridge, who sit just a place below them, on Saturday.

Jack Wilkinson put Haverhill ahead after beating the offside trap and latching on to a ball from deep but Ely’s Andrew Claydon managed to haul the hosts level.

Richard Chadwick flicked on a cross from wide, with Claydon popping up at the far post to apply a simple finish for his 21st goal of the season.

There were chances for both sides in the ensuing minutes but neither keeper was truly stretched until Impey struck as the game headed into injury time, his shot cannoning off the post before settling in the net.

The win came just three days after Alsop’s men managed to squander a two-goal lead at Godmanchester Rovers to lose 3-2.

Goals from Adam Murray and Josh Bridgeman put the Robins two up inside 25 minutes but a remarkable rally from the hosts saw them draw level and then snatch a winner in the 87th minute as Michael Hyem drilled home from long range.
