NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Assistant boss Martin Grey hails Ely City comeback kings
Assistant boss Martin Grey has hailed Ely City's comeback victory over Ipswich Wanderers as one of the Robins best performances of the season.
Ely stormed back from two goals down to snatch a 3-2 win in Suffolk - courtesy of goals from Tom Williams, Alex Theobald and Alex Brown - to secure back-to-back Thurlow Nunn Premier Division for the first time since August.
“The second half was probably our best attacking performance of the season,” he said.
“Some of the football we played was really pleasing to watch and we’ve been saying that the lads need to prove that they want to play and the certainly did that.
“We knew, even at 2-0 down, that the game was there if we could score and once we did it was only a matter of time until we got more.
“Alex Brown was fantastic down the left wing all game; he was playing more forward than he usually does and Alex Theobald led the line really well and got another goal.”
The Robins are now just three points behind local rivals and fifth-placed Newmarket Town, and Grey says last weekend’s win has given them a big boost ahead of Saturday’s FA Vase tie at Tring Athletic (3pm).
“We’ve always said that we want to get a top 10 finish and we really want to push for that now. It’s getting that consistency that we’ve spoke about before. Our form has been a bit hit and miss recently so getting back-to-back wins is pleasing,” Grey said.
“The win gives the lads great confidence going into the game. It’s a big occasion for everyone involved at the club and we’d love to go on a run like we did last season.
“They’re in a relegation battle at the moment but they won an important game at the weekend so they will be up for Saturday too but back-to-back wins and form goes out the window in the Vase so we know we’ll have to be at our best and hopefully we can get a good result.”
Ely have, however, been hit by news that they have been eliminated from the League Cup after fielding an illegible player against Wisbech St Mary last week.
