Ely City have been handed a free Saturday by the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division fixture list this weekend, a break which Brady Stone believes is well deserved.

The Robins suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Wroxham last weekend, Payton Swatman’s superb first half strike gave the Yachtsmen all three points; leaving Ely 9th in the Eastern Counties top-flight standings.

Brady Stone’s side return to action on Tuesday when they travel to second-placed Coggeshall Town (kick off 7.45pm).

“I think the lads have deserved their break this weekend,” he said.

“We have played a lot of football in a short space of time.”

“It is frustrating in some ways as we wanted to put the Wroxham defeat behind us as soon as we could and move on.

“But it does give us a chance to let one or two knocks and niggles settle down before we go again on Tuesday.

“I thought we were unlucky not to get something out of the Wroxham game.

“We pressed hard for an equaliser after going behind but it was just one of those days when it didn’t come.

“You get them sometimes in football and just have to move on.”

The Robins welcomed Tuesday night’s opponents to the Unwin earlier this month and were left on the wrong end of a 6-0 defeat.

Stone said his side owe Coggeshall one after the previous fixture.

“We know that Coggeshall are a good side, but we were poor when we came up against them.

“You can’t afford to give them anything. We learned that the hard way and I think we owe them one after the 6-0; we want to try put that behind us on Tuesday. “Coggeshall aren’t sitting second in the table at this stage for no reason.

“They have an excellent squad and it will be a real test for us and we won’t be making the same mistakes we made against them a few weeks ago.”

Ely City Reserves are in William Coad Intermediate Cup action on Saturday, the Robins second string welcome Orwell to the Unwin (kick off 3.45pm).
