ELY City finally booked a place in the quarter-finals of the Cambs Invitation Cup after beating Great Shelford for a third time.

The Robins' recently returned midfielder Robbie Mason, continued his fine form from the weekend's game with Wroxham by netting an extra-time brace to seal a 2-0 victory.

The game was deadlocked after 90 minutes following a hard fought encounter but Ely's persistence paid off midway through the first period of extra time when Mason capitalised on a defensive error to put the home side in front.

The setback caused Shelford to throw caution to the win in the remainder of extra-time and Ely capitalised on an exposed defence to make it 2-0 after Mason slotted home once more.

Ely were minutes away from winning the original tie in October of last year before a floodlight failure caused the tie to be called-off. In the tie's second replay, Shelford lodged a complaint over the fielding of Ely's Dale Archer who they deemed ineligible.

Ely will now face Soham in the quarter-finals of the competition with no date as yet set for the tie to be played.
