RIDGEONS LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION

Ely City 5 Downham Town 0

ELY boss Dennis Lightning believes his team can win the title if they beat leaders Swaffham Town on Saturday.

He said: "Promotion is a must, but if we want to win the title we have to do the business on Saturday."

City regained second spot by slaughtering Downham Town on Tuesday night, with Walsham losing 2-0 at home against Saffron Walden.

Tom Beech was handed a rare start in Ely's attack, and he gave City a 12th-minute lead by tapping in at the far post after an Andy Chatters corner.

Richard Dewsbury doubled the host's lead in the 26th minute by heading in from close range at the back post after a superb Chatters delivery from the left touchline, and then missed a great chance to score again when another pinpoint Chatters cross picked him out unmarked.

Beech was a constant handful and he clipped the top of crossbar in the 38th minute when attempting to lob the keeper.

Ely had the game won by the 51st minute when Chatters made it 3-0 by tapping into an empty net after Mason broke free and drew the keeper out.

Beech rounded the keeper to score his second to make it 4-0 just before the hour, and missed a chance to score his hat-trick when he stole the ball off the left-back but fired wide with just the keeper to beat.

Chatters stormed through a dejected Downham defence unopposed to complete the rout in the 87th minute.

Lightning said: "Tom Beech was on fire and Andy Chatters was back to his best. It was an excellent all round performance and we are going to have to reproduce it on Saturday."

Ely play Langford at home in the Hunts Premier Cup on Tuesday night.
