Ely City 2 Wisbech Town 3

WORKERS draining the Fens in the 17th faced major battles, including huge opposition from locals and shrinking peat.

Another battle of the Fens was played out on Tuesday night in treacherous rain and, like in the 1600s, passion, desire and will to succeed was needed for victory.

Wisbech were also aided by the clinical finishing of striker Scott Cubberley, who gave them a 15th-minute lead with a close-range finish after a low cross from the right.

Andy Pettit equalised four minutes later with a sweet finish at the back post following a corner.

A sustained period of Ely pressure followed and Stuart Cobb headed Ben Lawrence's powerful header off the line after another corner.

Wisbech fought back at the end of the half and Ely stopper Leigh Follen saved from a one-on-one before Fenmen striker Nick Impey spurned the chance to score against his old club when he shot wide after a wonderful flick from Cobb.

Ten minutes before the interval James McManus received a bizarre booking for shoving team-mate Impey after the striker didn't pass to him.

Ely dominated the early stages of the second half but went 2-1 down after 60 minutes following some poor defending.

A low cross from the right reached Cubberley in space and he buried his shot into the bottom left corner from 15 yards.

Rain continued to lash down and Ely piled on the pressure by testing Wisbech goalkeeper Chris Horton's handling with constant high balls into the penalty area and Pettit made it 2-2 with a header from a corner in the 72nd minute.

But six minutes later snatched the winner by turning the ball into the net from close range after Gary Setchell flicked on a corner.
