Agony for Greens in FA Cup clash

SOHAM were the width of the cross bar away from earning a lucrative FA Cup replay with King’s Lynn Town on Saturday.
King’s Lynn Town 2
Soham Town Rangers 1
With just seconds remaining in the match, and needing a goal to force a replay, Green’s midfielder Luke Hipwell clipped a speculative cross into the Lynn box only to see it clatter off the bar and fall safely, denying Soham an arguably deserved draw.
Andy Furnell’s men will be hoping to get back to winning ways again on Saturday as they travel to Heybridge Swift in the Ryman League Division One North.
Jack Defty forced a brilliant saved from Dan Bircham in the Soham goal early in the first half, as he connected well with a cross from wide but Soham were also lively early on, with chances for Richard Gammon and Matt Robinson.
With the match approaching half-time however, the UCL Premier high-flyers moved into the lead as Defty nodded past Bircham.
Bircham was at his best again early in the second half as Steven Spriggs fired in from range and, at the other end, Robinson saw his shot cannon off the inside of the post.
The Greens restored parity with 25 minutes remaining as some alert play from Robinson saw him seize on an errant back pass and fire past a dejected Lynn keeper.
The home side were back in front little more than a minute later though, as the ever-lively Spriggs popped up at the back post to nod home a deep cross.
Soham pushed numbers forward in the last quarter of the match as they fought desperately to get back on terms and Scott Carter was unlucky to see his effort swiped off the line having beaten the keeper.
Hipwell went closer still with the game in the dying seconds but it wasn’t to be for the Greens who came away empty handed.
