Among the elite and casual runners were willing walkers, energetic parents and grandparents seen either pushing their babies in buggies or accompanying their older children round the course, and enthusiastic doggie walkers.

“We thought we would come to run and support Littleport’s inaugural Parkrun,” said Pauline Blake, who accompanied by her Cambridge and Coleridge AC’s colleague Jennie Peacock, are not only part of the elite 50th Parkrun Club, but have notched up a staggering 309 and 72 Parkruns respectively.

“It was fantastic to see so many smiles and happy faces of the runners and marshals which was reward enough for all the hard work the team have put in,” said co-event director and seasoned park runner James Lee, who was also delighted to be celebrating his 50th birthday with like-minded people.

“Saturday mornings at the Littleport Leisure will have increased its public profile as regards Parkruns, and also such an activity does benefits the health and well-being of the local community,” concluded James, who had temporarily unselfishly hung up his running vest to join his team of 22 volunteers which has now put Littleport on the map of national Parkruns.

The results saw Ely Tri Club member, Josh Holman claim the first finishers spot by clocking a time of 16.19, while Elaine Smith of Ely Runners became the first woman over the finishing line in a time of 21.19.

Littleport’s Parkrun is every Saturday morning at 9 am at Littleport Leisure and it’s free.

Organisers emphasise that you must register online beforehand where you will be issued with your own barcode and unique number which enables anyone to run or walk in any parkrun up and down the country.
