A fine opening 15 minutes wasn’t enough for the Ely Tigers last weekend.
The local lads raced into the lead against high-flying Southwold thanks to tries from Harry Rogerson and accurate kicking from Joel Scott Paul, but the side in third replied with two tries of their own to take a lead into the break.
Southwold continued to pin Ely back in the second half and found touch with another flowing attacking move, before kicking a penalty late on to seal the points.
An Alex Milne try and a Scott Paul conversion gave the Tigers something to cheer about – and a losing bonus point – but the Suffolk club held on to seal a 22-13 success.
Ely, who are yet to win in 2017, take on second-placed Wanstead on January 28.
