TWO Handicap races were held on Sunday afternoon's meeting at Ely Sailing Club. Competitors were to combine their two finishing positions to determine the winner of the Jamie Butcher Memorial Trophy.
Four Enterprises, five Solos, a National Twelve, a Laser Radial and a Topper comprised the Fleet.
Gerald Copsey with his nine year-old daughter Tanya won the first race in the National 12 but on corrected time he lost out by 14 seconds to John Wells, crewed by Jai Robbins, in an Enterprise. The Solos of Niall Pearcey and Gary Ungless were third and fourth.
The second race was shortened for safety reasons because of the approaching thunder storms. Simon Leeks in a Solo won, followed by Gary Ungless with John Wells third.
The combined scores meant John Wells won the trophy with four points, Gary Ungless and Simon Leeks tied for second place with six points. Fourth place with eight points was tied between Gerald Copsey and Niall Pearcey.
The first race positions were used to determine the starting positions for a personal handicap race. In scratch position was Jack Knight in his Topper with the Enterprises of Suzie Sallis, crewed by Lawrence Perkins, and Mike and Heather Dawson starting five minutes later. The rest of the fleet went off at 10,12,13,17 and 18 minute intervals after Jack Knight. Suzie and Lawrence kept second place for two laps but the fleet converged and she finished 8th. Alex Tory worked his way through the fleet and after 50 minutes the race was stopped at the next mark with Alex in the lead. Second was Simon Leeks and third Martin Mills in his Laser Radial. The winner was awarded the Whitsun Trophy which had been abandoned earlier in the year due to adverse conditions.
