Rowers from Isle of Ely Rowing Club won medals with storming performances at the British Indoor Rowing Championships, held earlier this month at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
National media attention focused on Sir Bradley Wiggins, who finished 21st in the men’s 2000m sprint, his debut rowing race. Meanwhile, Ely rowers (with a bit more rowing experience than Sir Bradley) gave performances to be proud of.
Ely junior Seren Palmer, already a medal winner at last year’s British Championships, won bronze in the under-14s 500m sprint, as well as achieving 4th in the 4-minute race.
In the women’s 2000m races, Jill McCulloch held off strong opposition to come 5th in her age category, achieving a personal best and beating international club rowers in the process.
Ely was also brilliantly represented by rowers from the World Class Start programme. Imogen Magner won gold in the under-23 women’s 2000m race, while Jessica Day clinched silver in the women’s open race.
The Ely women’s team also finished inside the top ten in the 4km relay.
