DYNAMIC bowling duo Ollie Sellers and Duncan Fraser brought an end to Ely’s four-game losing streak with an outstanding display against Wisbech II at the weekend.
With only 127 runs to defend, Sellers and Fraser were tasked with bowling tight by captain Ed Aniskowicz and they did just that and more as they took all 10 Wisbech wickets between them to secure an comprehensive 83-run win.
The victory stops the rot of recent weeks and bolsters Ely’s position in sixth place in the league ahead of Saturday’s trip to league-leaders Old Leysians.
Ely opted to bat first after winning the toss on Saturday at the Paradise Centre but lost opener and captain Aniskowicz for a duck early on.
Number three Michael Sellers followed his captain back to the changing rooms shortly after, also without having scored.
The arrival of Andy Buck helped steady the ship for Ely, however as he made a patient 29 to add to Jonny Wallace’s 38 at the top of the order.
Lower down the order, Fraser added a further 29 to the total at number seven but there was little else of note as the hosts were dismissed for just 127 in little more than 30 overs. Lyndon Waters led the bowling for Wisbech, taking 4-26 from six overs.
After tea, Ely’s bowlers launched straight into the opposition line-up and the removal of both openers for a duck quickly raised hopes.
Sellers at one end and Fraser at the other proved an irresistible combination for Wisbech, with only Matthew Parrin (19) offering any kind of prolonged resistance.
The visitors were sent packing with just 44 runs scored, Sellers having taken 4-12 from seven overs and Fraser 6-19 from nine overs.
It was also a winning weekend for City of Ely II as they eased to a 58-run win over Wisbech IV in CCA Junior Division 4N.
Openers Thomas Beumont (46) and Matthew Tonge (44) were in excellent form at the top of the order as Ely posted 194 at the close. Richard Lee made a useful 28 in the middle order.
Rod Shipley hit 53 for Wisbech in their reply but even he couldn’t resist the Ely bowling attack forever, with Mark Deas picking up 5-27 and Dan Coston 4-32. Wisbech were bowled out for 136.
