ELY City's male bowlers atoned for their Denny Cup exit with a impressive win against St Neots in the Egham Trophy.
After the disappointment of last weekend's exit from the Denny Cup at the hands of Peterborough, Ely's bowlers were looking for a positive result in The Egham Trophy, which took place on Sunday.
St Neots were always going to be tough opponents and so it proved. Skippered by Ian Brown and Andrew Ware on the home rinks and Andrew Easy and Nicky Brett, making a speedy return from his exploits at The WBT International Open in Burgess Hill, away at St Neots all of the teams put in a strong performance.
Ian Brown was never behind and enjoyed a 23 - 10 victory. Andrew Ware also led from the opening end and in spite of dropping 8 shots over the last 3 ends triumphed 25 - 22. The away rinks were much more tight however and having been ahead for the whole match Nicky Brett found himself a shot down with three ends to go but ultimately secured a 19 - 17 win.
The win means City now meet Northampton and District in the Zone 4 final on Sunday December 14 before the competition goes national where the last eight clubs compete for the trophy.
The ladies were unable to repeat their heroics this week as they took part in The Lingford Trophy. After a great performance last weekend in a convincing win over Boston they faced Huntingdon away on Sunday evening.
With Ellen Falkner, Sarah Seymour and Sue Alexander all having played in the morning match against St Neots in The Egham Trophy a visit to Huntingdon was always going to be a tough assignment and so it proved with Ely losing both rinks.
