Ely Ladies 4 Cambridge City III 4

ELY fought back from three goals down to earn a season-opening draw with Cambridge City on Saturday.

Ely’s only goal in the first half came from Fiona Butler in a well-worked forward move that saw her link up with Jo Rayner.

The second half was an altogether different affair however, as Ely were forced to fight back to score three further goals to earn a draw.

The home side were always behind on the score sheet so had to show strength in character to lift their heads and work hard for their goals. Gemma Mott showing particular determination in midfield to win back lost balls.

Rayner claimed the first of three in another good attack lead by the forwards.

The second came from retuning ace Gemma Mott, who completed a good run upfield with a low sweep into the goal.

The final Ely goal saw goal-scoring supremo Dani Fletcher convert a penalty corner routine, finding the tightest of angles to slot the ball into the corner of the goal.

Mott was later awarded player of the match.

Ely captain, Ali Chapman said: “We have been focusing hard over the summer to build up a good squad of players that can progress through the season.

“I am really happy with the teams performance and hope we can improve on our weaknesses as a team, through training and desire to win.”
