Ely javelin star Goldie Sayers produced her best throw of the season at the Sainsbury's Anniversary Games.

In her second outing of an injury plagued season, she recorded a throw of 62.09m – in excess of the World Championships qualifying standard – to place sixth.

It was still someway short of the winning mark of 65.01m recorded by Latvia’s Madara Palameika, but Sayers had no complaints given her build up.

“I’ve hardly competed and hardly been able to throw off a full approach. I’m really happy with that,” said Sayers.

“That’s pretty much my second session off a full approach so with another month I can throw even further.

“My rhythm was a bit inconsistent but it was lovely being back in the stadium after such a bad injury and surgery with complications and a really long recovery. I felt I did myself justice.

“It was only my second competition, I feel off of a full run up there is a lot more to come. I need to keep plugging away - it was a good competition.”

Next month’s World Championships may just come too soon for Sayers. But whatever the outcome, she admitted her return to the Olympic Stadium, three years after the London Olympics, had been one she had relished.

She said: “It’s an inspiring stadium. It was lovely all the girls were happy to see me back.

“It was a lot of fun which is what this sport is all about. I’ll just keep working hard like I always do. I just need to tidy a few things up and keep the consistency up which I’ve not had.”
