Having set a new women's club record for 100 miles last weekend, Zena Palgrave repeated the feat on Sunday over 50 miles, finishing in a time of 2:05:05 to beat her previous record by just over two minutes.

Dan Bromilow and John Manlow also took part in the Shaftesbury CC event at which Palgrave set the new record, finishing the 50 mile course in times of 1:52:28 and 1:57:31 respectively.

The event was also notable due to the fact that the winning time of 1:30:31 set by Marcin Bialoblocki is a new competition record, being the fastest time for 50 miles ever set in the UK.

Ely riders also took part in three other time trial events over the weekend, starting on Saturday with the Islington CC 10 mile race held near Milton Keynes.

Steve Peck was the fastest Ely rider on the day, finishing with a time of 24 minutes and one second, closely followed by Derek Ricketts on 24:09 and Will Shepherd on 24:45.

Darran Bennnett headed to Norfolk on Saturday to race on the B10/3B course near Attleborough, and finished in a time of 20:50 which gave him ninth place overall on the day.

The club’s mountain bikers were also busy at the weekend, with Mat Eley and Mikie Burrell competing in the HSBC XC MTB National Championship race at the Olympic MTB venue at Hadleigh Park on Sunday.

Eley finished 22nd in the Elite race, completing five laps of the circuit in 1:25:04 while Burrell finished 16th in the Masters Sport race, completing four laps in 1:24:29.

Sunday also saw further time trial racing, with Martin and Alison Holmes enduring a very early start to Sunday morning in order to race in the Diss CC 10 mile race.

Martin finished in a time of 24:04, while Alison stopped the clock in a time of 30:56.

Finally, EDCC junior members were given a chance to compete at the end of the summer coaching season when the club held a Go-Ride race evening for the juniors.

The races were divided up into different age groups for the boys and girls, with each age category taking part in sprint, endurance and handicap races.

The results from each race were then used to calculate the overall standings at the end of the event.

An evening of close racing gave the junior members a chance to use the skills they had learned during the club’s coaching sessions, and provided exciting racing for the friends and family who had come along to spectate and support the young racers.

In the boys’ under eight category, Toby Turner came out on top, followed by Alex Shackleton and Tom Woodman.

In the next age category, the boys’ under 10s, Kieran Vanhoutte beat Peter Mathews (second) and Gabriel Woodman (third) to the top step of the podium.

Janie Allen took first place in the girls’ under 12s race, while Tom Lewis won the equivalent boys’ event, with James Dorrington and George Newson tied for second place.

In the oldest age category for under 14 riders, Dominic Beavis won the boys’ event, followed by Luke Shepherd and Isaac Barton while Niamh Woodroffe edged out Maya Hatch to take first place in the girls’ event.

The EDCC junior coaching sessions will resume again in September, and more information can be found on the Ely & District Cycling Club Juniors Facebook page.
