Brady Stone says he couldn’t be happier with Ely City’s current form – and it’s not difficult to see why.

The Robins chalked up their sixth straight league win with a 3-1 victory over Wivenhoe Town on Saturday, meaning Stone’s men have now won as many games as they did in the entire 2016/17 season.

Sam Reed, Alex Theobald and substitute Ryan Williams netted as Ely recorded maximum points for the 12th time, firing the Robins up to fifth in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division standings in the process, and manager Stone says his side’s excellent run is down to their ‘back to basics’ approach.

“It’s not a bad little spell,” Stone admitted. “I think we’re doing well because we’re just keeping it simple – not over-playing and passing it well.

“We’ve just found the little bit of form that we spoke about earlier in the season and we’ve got that winning mentality now. We just need to keep winning and keep pushing.

“We’ve got the same amount of wins as the whole of last season and we’re 27 points clear of relegation – which if you look at where we are in the league table is stupid but that’s the goal we set as a club at the start of the season.”

Fifth-placed Ely are now just four points behind Coggeshall Town in second, but, as ever, Stone insists his side will not get carried away – and will not take their trip to strugglers Hadleigh United on Saturday (3pm) lightly.

“We know it’s going to be a tough game. They have just got a new manager so we expect that will have gave them a bit of a boost - it’s the same from the Premier League to Sunday morning football, so we’ll have to be careful,” Stone said.

“There are no easy games in this division, so we have to treat every game like it’s Newmarket or Felixstowe and Hadleigh is the same.

“It’s a bit of a banana skin but Wivenhoe was the same and we got the job done then, so if we can keep that mentality then hopefully we can get another win and keep moving up.”

A handful of Ely’s reserves can expect to be in Stone’s thoughts for Saturday’s game after they secured another win on Saturday.

They won 3-1 at Bar Hill in the Kershaw Senior A Division – their fifth straight win in all competitions.

New signing Scott Callaghan continued his impressive recent form with a brace and Luke Mansfield also found the net as Ely’s second string closed the gap on league leaders Fowlmere to six points.
