Ely City 8 Cambridge City III 1

ELY produced a second half display on Saturday which was probably the best hockey played so far this season and rounds off a respectable season.

Cambridge started well and moved the ball around with ease, keeping the free scoring Ely side at bay for the early parts of the encounter. However, the pace and skill of the Ely forward line soon took control following the hard work in midfield by Jolley, Gilmour, Rutledge and Clarke to open up a healthy 3-0 lead for Ely by the break. Knowing that if Ely improved their goal difference by seven goals and Dereham slipped up with a draw against UEA, Ely would be promoted, Ely pressed forward in the second half and the flood gates opened. By the time the final whistle came four goals for Scott Gilmour and further goals for Grant Gilmour, Tom Rutledge, Tommy Hugo and skipper Chris Purllant, with a solitary single reply from former Ely skipper Chris Vincett for Cambridge City, gave Ely the points with an emphatic 8-1 win.

Ely finished the table in third position following the news that Dereham had been promoted with a 3-0 win over UEA.

Ely skipper Chris Purllant commented that despite a rapid departure of players at the start of the season Ely had performed consistently with passion and desire to end the season on a high and Ely would again be pushing for promotion next season.
