Ely City Golf Club Ladies secured one of the most prestigious pieces of silverware in the local golfing scene – the Jean Wilkinson Trophy.

The Ely golfers went head-to-head with top clubs from around Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire in the tournament at the beginning of September, and came out on top after seeing off the challenges of Brampton Park and last year’s champions, Saffron Walden.

Ely faced a strong Brampton Park side in the semi-finals and the away side produced a determined performance to leave the tie neatly poised at 3-3.

Ros Grey of Ely held a two hole lead in the final match but Jane McGlashen pulled back to level the score on the 18th hole. The match moved onto the 19th hole and Ros regained her composure to win the hole and guide Ely to a 4-3 victory and a meeting with Saffron Walden in the final.

The final was played in mild but blustery conditions, and Saffron Walden took the lead when Lynda Minton won a very close match against Jane Webster.

Ely City gradually took the initiative when Pat Nixon levelled the scores with a two and one win over Elaine Purcell. They edged ahead when Anne Mitchell secured a four and three victory over Cath Emery and Christine Ratcliffe increased the lead with a similar score against Barbara Nicoll.

Ros Grey, the hero of the morning match, sealed victory with a convincing eight and six victory to give Ely City a winning 4–1 margin. The remaining two matches were called in.
