The Ely City Hockey Club have had a busy weekend after taking on not only their usual scheduled league matches, but many of their teams faced rescheduled matches from Christmas.
Various matches were cancelled over the festive period due to the playing pitch being frozen over making games impossible to play.
It was also a successful weekend for the Mens 1s who won 7-1 away against Spalding 3s on Saturday.
Matt Samouel scored a hat trick for Ely City whilst Tom Grimshaw scored two goals and Richard Scargill and Dan Jolly scored one goal each.
The Mens 1s were out again on Sunday, this time at home against Leadenham 1s, winning 4-1.
Matt Samouel added to his tally with two goals and Marc Hunt and Feroze Abbas each scored one goal.
Ely City Ladies 1s faced City of Peterborough 3s on Saturday.
Rachel Carpenter, captain, said: “It was a slightly tougher match than we expected and we ended the game with a 0-0 draw.”
In their match on Sunday against Huntingdon 1s though, Ely City Ladies 1s bounced back with a 7-2 win.
Jo Rayner scored an impressive five goals and Becca Sharpe and Sarah Sutton scored one goal each.
Ely City Mens 2s though take the prize for the best the match of the weekend winning 3-0 away against St Neots 5 playing with only nine players!
Mike Wilderspin, Craig Hall and Yahya Shah were the goal scorers.
Julien Porre, captain, said: “It was an epic game.”
The Ladies 2 were less successful, although their score lines were much improved on those before Christmas.
Their match against Haverhill 2s was very close but ended with a 2-1 loss and Mo Hudson scoring Ely’s only goal.
And on Sunday they lost 4-1 against Sudbury.
Gemma Neal, captain, said: “It was a very close match against Haverhill on Saturday and we were unfortunately unable to convert a penalty corner in the last few minutes of the game to make it a much deserved draw.
“Our match against Sudbury was a good one too and although we lost, at least we are now putting pressure on the opposition and scoring some goals.”
Ely City Mens 3s played well in a close match against Cambridge Nomads 3 but unfortunately ended the game 1-0 down.
