Ely City Golf Club member Alfie Guy-Pinkney showed his potential by winning the club’s junior open.

The 15-year-old clinched the scratch prize with a near flawless one-over-par round of 73.

The two-handicapper was solid from the start and picked up a couple of birdies on his way to a two-shot success from Newmarket member George Whitehall.

A record field of 38 golfers from 11 different clubs teed up and the first division of the handicap tournament again saw two Ely members to the fore.

Ben Collier, 13, signed for a net score of 70 that was good enough to triumph on count-back from fellow 17-handicapper Rohan Neat.

The second division was played under a Stableford format and Bourn golfer Callum Wright was victorious on 37 points – three more than club-mate Tom Baptie.

Andrew George, Ely City Golf Club’s head PGA professional, said: “There was some great golf played by all the players in the field and Alfie Guy-Pinkney’s scratch-prize win was especially impressive.

“But what was really noticeable throughout the day was the brilliant atmosphere that the juniors created. There was a real buzz and enthusiasm for the game.

“This was the best field we’ve had for a Junior Open – certainly in recent times – and is something we’re really keen to grow in 2019 and beyond.”
