CITY of Ely bowler Ellen Falkner has won a top national award.

The 28-year-old from Littleport picked up the Times/Henselite Woman Bowler of the Year award at the weekend.

She reached three national finals in 2006, winning the triples with mother Sue Alexander and grandmother Dorothy Bowers, and the pairs with her mother. She lost in the final of the singles to Edna Bessell.

Falkner, a part of the England fours Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning team of 2002, said: "Several other English female bowlers have achieved and it's been a tough year so I'm delighted to achieve this award."

Meanwhile, City of Ely progressed to the fifth round of the Denny Cup with an 86-66 win over Huntingdon, but two of the club's stars enjoyed mixed fortunes in the Scottish International Open.

World No 2 Greg Harlow suffered a shock first-round defeat to debut-making New Zealand qualifier Ray Boffa. Harlow took the first set 13-2 and led the second 7-4, but Boffa fought back to take it,

9-7, and then win the tie-break 2-0.

But Nicky Brett recovered from a 10-0 first-set defeat to overcome Jonathon Ross, winning the second set 11-2 and the tie-break 2-1 and then cruised past Boffa, 13-3, 9-3, to reach the quarter-final.

Brett will play either Jason Greenslade or John Price today (Thursday) at 1pm.
