CITY of Ely’s Denny Cup team continued their successful defence of the cup on Saturday with a difficult win over Solihull. Forced by the challengers to play the match at a neutral venue the men travelled to Desborough on Saturday morning. A steady rather than spectacular start saw Ely ahead by 8 shots after 5 ends. However, Solihull rallied and by the conclusion of the 10th end had taken a 5 shot lead and the omens did not seem positive for the holders. Due mainly to Nick Brett and Stuart Popple’s rinks Ely’s men had pulled the deficit back and led by 2 shots after 15 ends. Experience at this level is invaluable and it seemed to count as the team went on to secure the win by 82—67. Ely now face County Arts from Norwich in the last 16 on Saturday 17th December.

On Sunday captain Sarah Seymour led the club’s mixed team to a win over Kingsthorpe from Northampton in The Egham Trophy. Wins were secured on all 4 rinks with an overall score of 86—61. This match was never going to be easy and all four rinks were hard fought. At home Andy Easy with Maureen Cross, Sue Alexander and Ian Brown won by 11 shots. Greg Harlow, with Rosemary Easy, Sarah Seymour and Andrew Ware won by 6. Solid performances away saw Nick Brett and Stuart Popple both win by 4 shots. Next up in The Egham Trophy is a last 16 tie against Westlecot from Swindon. The match will be played at a neutral venue on Sunday 18th December

The club also announced the appointment of Michael Platell as club manager this week. Michael wil commence his duties for the club on Monday December 12.
