FORDHAM gave themselves a much needed boost with a fine win on a difficult pitch.

Cambridge St Giles opted to bat first after winning the toss and were soon in trouble with all the Fordham bowlers dominant.

The home side were shot out for 73 with Carl Arnold taking 4-6 from nine overs, Jason Harding 3-7 and Clinton Cornwell 3-19 from 10.

Opening bowler Graham Arnold again bowled well, conceding just six runs in his six overs.

Fordham knew their task would not be easy and they lost their first three wickets for nine runs.

But Chris Rule (17) and Neil Clark (19) stabilised the innings and allowed Fordham to close in on victory.

It was left to Jason Harding and Adam Cornwell to see their side home to a deserved but hard-earned victory.

D Burton (11) and K Lewin (16) were the only other Girton players to reach double figures.

P Baker was the home side's top bowler with 4-18 from nine overs, R Duffield impressed with 3-13 from 7.5 overs and J White took 2-23 as Girton were all out within 33 overs.

Littleport 97

Needingworth 99-6

Needingworth won by four wickets

WITH an all too familiar trend developing, Littleport find themselves sitting second from bottom after losing on Saturday.

Being put into bat by Needingworth on a bowler-friendly wicket, Littleport needed a good start. G James (17) and J South (19) took 'Port to 43-1 until both falling in the same over. A South (15) and A Dougan (11) progressed to 80-4 before the Needingworth bowlers broke through.

With the batsmen disappointing again, the bowlers needed something special. C Lupson (6-22) was the source of the fight, bowling four of his victims. At 70-6 after 20 overs, there was still a slim chance of a 'Port victory, but no one was able to support Lupson and gain a break through.

With the Kirkland Cup starting this week, and a fixture against bottom of the table Fordham at the weekend, Littleport will be hoping for a change in fortunes.

CCA Division 1N

Longstanton Grasshoppers 261-6 Fordham II 94

Longstanton Grasshoppers

won by 167 runs.

FORDHAM'S second team, missing several players, were overpowered by a strong Longstanton Grasshoppers side.

The visitors left Fordham with an overwhelming 261 target with David Dalton (73) and Andy Aspinall (68 not out) their main run makers.

Yet Fordham bowlers Gary Palmer (2-39, Phil Dean (2-40) and young Sean Brighty (2-41) stuck to their task well.

The hosts struggled early on and only skipper Steven Morley (19) and Sean Brighty (15) made any real impression.

CCA Division 2NA

Soham 189-7 Burwell III 176

Soham won by 13 runs.

IN a thrilling and very tight match Soham finally came out on top, bowling Burwell out in the 39th over of their run chase.

Soham lost the toss and batted first and valuable contributions from Josh Pope (72) and Ian Bowman (26) formed a solid platform.

But tight bowling from Burwell with G Summerskill taking 4-46 and K Driver, 2-38, meant that a likely Soham target of more than 180 was not going to be reached. That was until a fine display from Liam Eley, who reached 31, put them back on track.

Burwell started well, but some very tight and accurate bowling from Tony Kirby-Cook (1-26) and Eley left them on 30-3 after 10 overs.

Excellent mid-order batting from D.E. Pfeiffer (45), Driver (27) and Chinery (36) left Burwell looking like they were going to make the target. But when Pfeiffer was run out Soham were back in the driving seat and it was the old head on youthful shoulders of Dave Lunn (4-54) and Eley (3-45) that left Burwell all out in the 39th over, just 12 runs short of their target.

CCA Division 2NA

Sutton 103 St Ives II 104-3

St Ives won by seven wickets.

SUTTON'S small total was never going to be enough to match a strong St Ives second string.

Sutton were put in to bat on a slow and damp wicket but made a steady start, but R Wells (4-42) and K Sequenza (3-24) destroyed their middle order to leave St Ives with a very reachable target.

James Nuttall (2-31) bowled both St Ives openers with excellent deliveries but R Withers (40 not out) and M Hunt (28) saw the home side to victory.

Witcham 135

Ely/Haddenham II 140-6

Ely/Haddenham II

won by four wickets.

VETERAN Bruce King starred with bat and ball in a surprise derby win for rock-bottom Ely on Saturday.

Visiting Ely put Witcham into bat and after a poor start Chris Houghton, who also went on to become his side's best bowler, gave his side hope with an impressive 46.

Support came from Stuart Hare (12) and Ian Saberton (15) but King's spin bowling proved too much for the Witcham batsmen. King finished the innings on 4-19 from 5.1 overs to put his side in a commanding position.

And the same man stood at the crease for the entire innings with a superb 73 not out to ensure Ely victory, with Daniel Beavis (19) providing solid support.

CCA Division 3NA

Wilburton 90

Bluntisham II 37

Six wickets fell for six runs in a middle order collapse and bowlers Mark Turner (4-20) and Rolf Searle, in stunning form with 3-3, wrapped up the innings.

After 20 overs Bluntisham had scored just 13, thanks to the fine bowling of Ian Jacobs (2-16-10) and Steve Marshall (1-5-10). Seven wickets then fell for 11 runs as Chris Hughes had a spell of six wickets for two runs from 22 balls, leaving Turner (14) and extras (11) as the top scorers.

Milton 192-7 Witcham 183-7

A NARROW defeat saw Witcham knocked out in the first round of the competition they won in 2004.

Milton batted first and S Allen (29) got them off to a good start.

But No.6, A Minto, was the star of the innings with 63 and S Coston (28 not out) and S Allen (23) also made useful contributions.

Chris Houghton finished with Witcham's best bowling figures of 26-3-8.

Witcham produced a spirited response and narrowly missed out on their target.

No.2, Michael Hook, was the highest scorer with 45 and Ian Saberton (18) and Nigel Phillips (24 not out) ensured a tight finish.
