ELY pulled out all the stops to finish second at the Junior Fenland League Gala in March at the weekend, despite having a much-depleted team.

Just nine swimmers competed in the 43 event gala - less than half the usual full strength squad.

Most swimmers had to compete in every one of the four strokes, plus relays, and individual medleys.

Demonstrating their determination, every swimmer in the team managed to beat a previous best time, and five ASA speed awards were won on the night.

Ten-year-old Maya Westlake achieved bronze for the 50m breaststroke, and 11-year-old Claudia Mason also took bronze in the 50m butterfly, and silver in the 50m freestyle.

Camilla Lontay, 12, took gold in the 50m freestyle, and 11-year-old Braddan Westlake clocked up a platinum time for the 50m butterfly.

n Twenty-three swimmers from Ely ASC will be in Germany this weekend to compete in an international gala against 16 other teams in an Olympic-sized open-air pool in Kempen.
