HADDENHAM’S tilt at a third successive promotion continued to gather pace as they overcame neighbours Wilburton.

Jason Murfitt led Haddenham’s assault with the bat as he smashed 64, with able support from Geoff Buck (57) and Neil Smith (19) helping push the score on to 171-7 at the close of the innings.

Wilburton’s Ryan Newton (4-35) bowled superbly to keep Haddenham below the all-important 200-run mark while Steve Marshall (2-36) aquitted himself well.

Some steady work from Lee Newton (42) kept Wilburton in business early on but Ian Jaconbs was quick to make his mark with the ball as he picked up 4-21 to throw a spanner in the works.

Wilburton’s Thom Walker (24) and Gary Dewey (27*) revived the visitors challenge late on only for Dillon Wass (1-27) and Smith (1-28) to sew things up.

? A SOLID all round performance from Littleport II helped them to a six-wicket win over Ely II.

Batting first, Ely struggled from the outset as openers Mark Higginson (4) and S Jackson (7) fell cheaply and it was only the patient play of Michael Sellers (44) that kept the wolves from the door as Port turned the screw.

Oliver Sellers hit 21 to keep Ely’s scorecard ticking over but a devastating late blitz from Mark Scott (5-31) ensured any hopes of a comeback were short-lived.

Chris Farnell (2-15) also had some success as Ely were dismissed for 114.

Andy Race smashed 30 at the top of the order for Littleport in their reply and some good work from Stuart Wallace (27) and Simon Jennings (25*) made victory a formality for the home side.

Ely’s David Cook (1-19) plugged away admirably for the visitors.

Cambs and Hunts Premier

AN imperious bowling effort from Ian Jelleyman handed Fordham their second win in as many weeks.

The Fordham seamer was in electric form as his side were asked to bowl first by Weston Colville, collecting five wickets for just 32 runs in his 13-over spell.

Though middle-order batsmen Adam Taylor hit 68 to steady the ship, it wasn’t long before he too fell to Jelleyman who was ably supported by Clinton Cornwell 2-48 and Graham Arnold 2-25 to bowl the home side out for 125.

A decent-enough start by Mark Silcock (20) put Fordham in command of the match and capable knocks of 41 and 33 bt Matt Foulds and Joel Gilmour made the victory a formality. The winning runs were hit in the 33rd over, with seven wickets in hand.

CCA Division 2A

SUTTON cemented their berth in the Division 2 promotion places with a crushing 107-run win over Wisbech.

Lloyd Brown smashed 63 and Martin Cuthbertson hit 44 at the top of the order for Sutton as they took to the crease first.

The top-order duo’s good work was backed up by stalwart Chris Greaves who clattered eight boundaries on his way to 54, an excellent effort that eventually saw Sutton reach 198-6 at the close.

Ace Wisbech bowler Paul Strickle tried to work his magic with the bat at the top of the order for the visitors but quickly became unstuck as Sutton’s attack profited.

Cuthbertson took 2-7, Cornelio De Plessis 2-10 and Ryan Bowles 2-16 as Sutton took command with the ball. A brief rally from Dean Dodman (29) added some much-needed bite to the Wisbech innings but it came too late to rescue his side as Greaves (2-32) moved in to finish the job.

? A CRACKING bowling effort was frittered away by the Soham batsmen as they lost out by just 11 runs to Leverington.

Asked to bowl first, Soham duo Stephen Bell (4-36) and Tom Clayton (4-37) were in superb form, keeping the home batsmen under control and Soham in command.

A cameo of 30 from lower order batsmen Matt Gill together with 37 extras took a touch of gloss off the innings but Soham left themselves with an excellent chance of a win after wrapping up the last wicket for 146.

A shaky start from Soham openers Trevor Pauley (10) and Todd Bridgland (5) handed the momentum to the home side early in the innings and a duck from the normally reliable Nick Mingay left Soham in dire straits.

Michael Harvey (34) and Joshua Pope (31) did their bit to haul Soham back into the mix but it wasn’t to be as Leverington closed out the win with an over to spare.

Senior League Division 2

CITY of Ely picked up a much-needed win over league strugglers Milton on Saturday.

Some excellent bowling from Milton early on had Ely on the back foot, with openers Jonny Wallace (2) and Matthew Tonge (8) dismissed cheaply.

The arrival of Mark Hatcher at the crease caused a shift in momentum however, as he clattered nine boundaries on the way to a cool 62. Andrew Foster pitched in with 52 in the middle order while tailenders R Vinsett (28*) and Chris Reay (25*) did their bit to push the home side on to 207-7 at the close.

A shaky start from Milton in their reply had Ely sensing victory and it was only some stubborn work from David Clark (50) that kept the home side from wrapping up a more comprehensive win.

Kingshuk DasGupta led the way for Ely with impressive figures of 4-44 while Vinsett wieghed in with 2-1 from his whirlwind over.
