Table Tennis Soham Comrades V entertained Ely V in the Handicap Cup and showed no mercy, thrashing the visitors 5-0.

Nicky Rule (17), Chris Rule (15) and Lito Jumilla (15) were just too consistent for Simon Braschi (17), John Dyal (22) and Simon Bickers (18) - although some of the matches were extremely close.

NCI visited Soham Comrades II and the evening kicked off with a long match between Comrades’ Bela Szabo (9) and Howard Morley (8), with Morley taking it in three legs.

Comrades responded as Robin Wallis (7) beat Peter Moffatt (4) two straight and then Kin Choi Chan (8) defeated Kelvin Mitchell (7), also in two legs.

However, NCI continued to press and Moffatt beat Szabo in two and Mitchell beat Wallis, again in two.

Kin completed his maximum for Comrades, defeating Morley and Moffatt, both wins being two straight. Szabo completed a disappointing evening losing to Mitchell in three but then Wallis beat Morley in two. Overall a very close match with Kin’s maximum and Wallis’ two just shading it for Comrades.

Ely III were able to field only two players for their second round match against Fulbourn I but they put up a tremendous fight.

Anne Chambers (12), with her fantastic hand to eye co-ordination, returned shot after shot at high velocity and Fred Laband (11), with inexhaustible energy, forever chasing the ball down.

The Fulbourn trio of Jannek Hauser (5), David Lam (9) and Richard Hatley (9) faced the challenge with no little anxiety but prevailed in the end. Chambers deserved her win against Lam, a reward for her constant concentration but this was Ely’s only success.

Fulbourn III found Elsworth I’s Roger Fensom (0) in outstanding form for their Ccup match. Fensom was untroubled in his accumulation of maximum points but with the Fulbourn trio all taking points off Joe Thorogood (7) the tie hinged on Elsworth’s Peter Goatly (6). With Dave Roitman (14) losing to Goatly and Tom Lodziak (9) claiming his second point of the night the tie went to the final game of the evening. A close contest between Goatly and Phil Hague (11) saw the first two legs shared before Goatly took a tense deciding leg 31-29 to see Elsworth through to the next round.
